Will a Plant-Based Diet Help Your Elderly Loved One?

Will a Plant-Based Diet Help Your Elderly Loved One?
Many younger adults are finding that a plant-based diet helps them to live a healthier lifestyle. They eliminate eggs, dairy, and meat from their diets. However, it is important to see that a plant-based diet is also very beneficial to elderly adults. If you or caregivers are helping out your elderly loved one, this is something you might want to bring up to them. Share with your loved one the great benefits of eating a plant-based diet.

Increased Telomerase Production

Eating a plant-based diet will increase the telomerase production in your elderly loved one’s body. Telomerase is one of the enzymes that help to rebuild the ends of DNA strands, also called the telomeres. These strands get shorter as people age, which is why it is important to eat foods that help to rebuild the ends. According to UCSF, it has been shown that going 3 months only eating a plant-based diet will significantly reverse or slow down the aging process.

Boosting the Immune System

If your elderly loved one is eating a lot of meat or animal products, they aren’t as likely to eat enough vegetables and fruits. By not getting enough of these foods, the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol are increased. On the other hand, if your elderly loved one is getting enough vegetables and fruits, they are more likely to have a better immune system, boosted energy, better sleep, and reap other benefits, as well.

Better Skin Health

We all know that as someone ages, their skin starts to show those effects of aging. However, there are some ways to keep the skin healthier and younger-looking, as well. If your elderly loved one eats a plant-based diet, they can have better skin health. Research has shown that vegetables and fruits are high in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. All of these things will help to reduce inflammation in the skin. They also improve the synthesis of collagen in one’s skin. Both of these things help to make the skin look much younger.

These are some of the best benefits that a plant-based diet will offer to your elderly loved one. If your loved one is currently eating meats and animal-based products, talk to them more about these benefits. You can check to see if they would willing to slowly cut out those animal-based products and meats from their diet. It doesn’t have to all be done at once. For instance, you or their caregivers can put in one more serving of vegetables or fruits a day, in place of a meat or animal product.
