How Can You Respect Your Elderly Loved One's Dignity as Her Family Caregiver?

Caregivers in East Millcreek UT

Rolling in like you're in charge is not the best way to keep your loved one's best interests in mind and it's likely to make her feel less than. That's probably not your goal at all, so it's essential to figure out how to be an excellent family caregiver without destroying your loved one's dignity in the process.

Focus on Quality of Life

What you're really doing as your loved one's caregiver is making sure that her quality of life meets her expectations. When you're focused on making sure that your loved one is experiencing a solid standard of life, she's able to focus her time and energies on other aspects of her life. You're keeping her comfortable and happy while she's able to go about the task of simply enjoying that.

Ask Her What She Needs

You're not a mind reader, though, and no one expects you to be, truly. The best course of action when you're trying to figure out how to give your loved one the best quality of life that you can is to talk with her. Ask your loved one what she needs and what she wants. Find out what she wants from you in the way of help and assistance. You may be surprised at what she really needs as opposed to what you believe that she needs.

Sort out Your Priorities

Once you've talked with your loved one, you can start to work through the priorities in terms of keeping her quality of life high. She might need help maintaining her independence, keeping her activity level up, or even keeping her home safe. Prioritizing this list of "to dos" keeps you from running from one task to another mindlessly and getting less done than you expect.

Revisit Those Priorities Often

Your loved one's priorities don't remain static, unfortunately. She may develop health problems or her health may improve significantly. All of that affects which priorities are now the most important. So revisit your list of priorities and continue to talk with your loved one about what she needs and wants from you as her family caregiver. Revisiting allows you to make sure that you're consistently providing the best help possible to your loved one.

Always keep your elderly loved one's best interests in mind and you're less likely to infringe on her dignity in any way.
